HOW DOES A ZONED CONTROLLED HVAC SYSTEM WORK?

In order to install HVAC zoning in your home, you’ll first need to divide it into zones. Some homeowners do this by room, but you can also do it by section. For example, your kitchen and living area, if connected, can be one zone. You’ll need at least two zones, each with its own thermostat.

Once you’ve established the zones within your home, there will need to be a thermostat installed for each zone. Each thermostat will direct the heating and cooling of the zone that it covers, but all of the thermostats will be connected to the same heating and cooling system.

Next, plates or valves called dampers will be installed within the duct system (or at the openings of the air outlets) in order to direct heat according to the zones. The dampers will regulate the ducts’ airflow and allow for different temperatures in different zones.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INSTALLING A ZONED HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM?

Zone controlled heating and cooling systems are great for maintaining every family member’s individual comfort level, as well as preventing heat from being wasted in unoccupied rooms. There are so many benefits to a zoned heating and cooling system that you’ll wonder why you didn’t have it installed sooner.

ELIMINATE HOT AND COLD SPOTS IN THE HOME

If you’ve ever felt totally warm and comfortable in the living room and then gone to your bedroom and felt frigid, you know about the annoyance of cold and hot spots. By creating zones within your home and allowing you to redirect the warm and cool air where you need it most, you can completely eliminate uneven heating and cooling.

LESS WEAR AND TEAR ON YOUR HVAC SYSTEM

Without a zoned system, homeowners often end up turning up and down temperature on the thermostat based on how they feel in a particular room in the house. With zoned heating and cooling, homeowners can simply set the temperatures they want for the various zones within their home, and no major adjustments are necessary.

CONTROLS EACH AREA OF THE HOME SEPARATELY

Having extra rooms is great for storage or for guests. But when these rooms are unoccupied, you waste a lot of energy heating and cooling these rooms. If you’ve got unoccupied rooms, or a whole unoccupied floor, then you might want to consider a zoned system. You can shut off the heat to certain sections of your house so you save on your heating and cooling bills. This keeps the heat in the rooms that need it, and prevents energy from being wasted.

IMPROVES INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Your ductwork connects every room to your HVAC system. Air travels from the furnace through the ductwork and into the room you’re in. As it travels, the air picks up dust and allergens from vents in other rooms. This means that any allergens or pollutants that are in the air will be dispersed thoroughly. With a zoned system, air only circulates in the zone and not the entire house, maintaining indoor air quality. This is a great option if you have someone in your home that is sick. You can easily quarantine them into their own zone so their germs do not travel through the ducts and make other members of your family sick.

HOW MANY ZONES DOES MY HOME NEED?

The number of zones your home needs really depends upon several factors, one of which is your personal desires and preferences. Essentially, you only need two zones to have a zoned heating and cooling system, but you can have more if you deem them necessary.

Some homeowners will choose to designate a different zone for each bedroom upstairs and then one zone for the downstairs area. Other homeowners will have one zone upstairs and one zone downstairs. There’s no limit on the number or arrangement of zones you can have, and we can help you decide what arrangement could be best for you and your home.
